How to Create More Profitable Content in 2016

January 22, 2016 - Posted by Rocket Ranking

2015 is done and dusted. Hopefully, you had a good year as far as your content marketing strategy goes. But in 2016, you can seriously crank up your content marketing efforts and achieve significantly better results.

Are you interested in knowing how?

The concept is rather simple. You need to create more profitable content in 2016.

Too simple? Nope, it isn’t.

Bloggers and content marketers focus on so many different things that they fail to concentrate on the most important aspect of content creation, i.e., creating more profitable content.

In this blog post, we are going to discuss how you can create more profitable content in 2016.

Let’s start.

1. Don’t Neglect Keyword Research

Keyword research isn’t dead. It is still very relevant, and it will continue to play an important role. If your main aim is to create more profitable content in 2016, you need to start with proper keyword research.

Start with identifying your most relevant keywords. Create keyword groups that you can later associate with products, features, and marketing campaigns for your online business.

Creating keyword groups will also help you later during analysing your competitors and comparing your content marketing efforts with them.

2. Create a Series of Content

While you can always create new contents on different ideas, my suggestion for 2016 would be to create entire series of content. As your goal is to increase ROI and profitability, creating a series makes the most sense.

By “a series of contents”, we mean that you first identify profitable keywords and then create multiple new pieces based on those keywords. More importantly, all those new pieces should be integrated and linked with each other.

For instance, if you have a blog on “online marketing”, you should create multiple posts for one subtopic, say, SEO, instead of creating posts on different subtopics, e.g., Facebook advertising, SEO, conversion optimisation, Twitter marketing, traffic generation, lead nurturing, etc.

3. Create Relevant Content Upgrades and Lead Magnets

Another benefit of using the previous tactic is that you can easily create and leverage relevant content upgrades.

Here is an example.

These content upgrades should be primarily used as lead magnets. And if you have created a series of contents, you can create one content upgrade/lead magnet and use it for multiple posts.

Eventually, you will be able to generate new, very targeted email leads at the cost of only one lead magnet. More leads at a relatively lower cost means more profits and more customers.

4. Analyse Your Competitors

You must do your own research, but don’t forget to analyse what your competitors are doing. If you closely follow them, you will be able to find out their keyword research and content creation strategy. A simple analysis can lead you to dozens of profitable content ideas.

Here is a brief guide on how to analyse your competitors’ keywords. Moreover, you can also use the Google Keyword Planner to find out more about the keywords your competitors are using.

Just copy the URL of your competitor’s website and paste it in the Google Keyword Planner (as shown in the following image).

Having said that it is important to identify the wrong strategies and keywords. Otherwise, if you follow everything blindly, you may end up on the losing side.

5. Use the Reverse Engineering Tactic

As I mentioned in the previous tip, it is important to identify which tactics are working for your competitors and which of them aren’t. You can then follow the proven formulae to imitate their content marketing success for your own business.

Use a tool like BuzzSumo to find if your competitors are seeing any success or not.

6. Revisit Your Old Content

Ignoring your old content is a rookie mistake that most bloggers and content marketers make.

We understand that you are excited for 2016 and all the new content ideas that are brewing up in your head. It’s a good sign, but don’t forget to browse some of your old blog posts and leverage them.

Specifically speaking, we would be only interested in the most popular posts of your blog. These are the posts that have been proven successful with your target audience and blog readers.

There are three different ways you can leverage those old-but-popular blog posts:

  • If they are still popular and receiving search engine traffic, create a lead magnet for them to start generating email leads from them.
  • Update the posts, include new tips & tricks, and add new information that is relevant now. The efforts will be minimum, but it will drive more traffic to those posts.
  • Create new blog posts based on those popular and proven ideas. Use slightly different angles but leverage the ideas/topics that become popular with your readers.

In Conclusion

To create more profitable content in 2016, you will also take a look at the cost of content creation. Overall, there are three rules that you will have to follow:

  • Minimise the cost of content creation whenever possible. For instance, leverage your old posts or add minimal efforts to start generating leads.
  • Focus on email lead generation. That’s the most profitable way to find new business opportunities.
  • If you are creating new content, make sure that you use proven ideas and models, so you don’t waste your time, efforts, or resources on contents that are not likely to work.
