There are many sources by which you can receive website traffic. However, if search engines like Google aren’t your primary source of traffic, there must be something wrong with your SEO strategy.
In order to fully utilise this traffic source, you must optimise your blog posts for search engines.
Here is a 10-point SEO checklist that will help you optimise your new blog post for search engines.
- Despite what anybody says, keywords are still important. Before you start your new blog post, research all the relevant keywords and popular phrases that your target audience is searching the most. Just remember that stuffing keywords is a bad practice and can have negative impacts on your website’s search engine rankings.
- Make sure your main keyword is included in the title/headline of your blog post.
- Similarly, the H1, H2 and H3 tags are also equally important. Having your main keywords in these headings improve the possibility of getting ranked higher in the search engines.
- Optimise the permalink (URL) of your new blog post, and include your primary and most searched keyword in your blog’s URL.
- Don’t forget to include your main keywords in the first 100 words of your blog post. Google’s search engine crawlers put a lot more emphasis that are found in the beginning of the post.
- How long are you planning to create your new blog post? An analysis by SerpIQ shows that blog posts with more than 2,000 words tend to rank higher in the search engines. It is almost impossible to rank a blog post higher in the search engine rankings if it has thin and mediocre content. Make sure not to add any fluff or filler content.
- Have you taken any information from an external source or blog post? If you have, make sure you link to it properly. Nothing annoys Google more than duplicated content.
- Don’t forget to include images in your new post. Blog posts that have images receive 94% more traffic views. Moreover, have you optimised the file name and alt text of the image for search engine purposes? It’s important.
- Old blog posts are more matured and usually carry more authority than new blog posts. Once you publish your new blog post, go and visit some of your old posts that are somewhat relevant and create a link to your newly published post. Because of the fact that the older posts carry more authority, your new post will have a better chance to gain a higher search engine position.
- 10. Implied links are real (mentions of your brand but no physical backlink to your website). Make sure you add them whenever it is perfectly suitable. Now that Google understands implied links, you don’t always have to create an actual outbound link.
